This design was inspired by the cluster of stars known as Matariki. Matariki is also the name of the mother star in which her eight children derive from – Waitī, Waitā, Waipunarangi, Ururangi, Tupuānuku, Tupuārangi, Hiwaiterangi and Pōhutukawa. Each of these stars represent an important element in the life cycle. When the moon is in the first lunar month of the year Matariki will rise which symbolises the Māori New Year.
Through this design, we acknowledge all nine stars and the different element that they bring, which is all encapsulated and sits within the kupenga - the net of this design.
